Carlos Alcarez wrapped up a historic swing through the majors in 2025 with his second Grand Slam of the year when he downed rival Jannik Sinner 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in New York on Sunday. Alcarez and Sinner reached the finals of the last three Slams, with with Alcaraz winning Roland Garros and the U.S. Open and Sinner taking the Wimbledon final.
Alcaraz has won 37 of his last 38 matches since late May, with his only defeat coming to Sinner at Wimbledon.
With the victory, Alcaraz will overtake Sinner at World No. 1 when the new rankings are released on Monday.

Alcaraz will now turn his attention to the eighth edition of the Laver Cup, to be held in San Francisco Sept. 19-21. Alcaraz will be the top player for Team Europe as it takes on Team World in a team competition that features singles and doubles and will be played at the Chase Center.
Alcaraz will be joined by World No. 3 Alexander Zverev from Germany, World No. 11 Holger Rune from Denmark, World No. 12 Casper Ruud from Norway, World No. 16 Jakub Mensik from the Czech Republic and World No. 26 Flavio Cobolli from Italy.
The team will be captained for the first time by Yannick Noah.

Alcaraz was critical for Team Europe in his first appearance in 2024, winning two matches on the final day that ultimately won back the Laver Cup for the Europeans. The team competition came down to a winner-take-all singles match between Alcaraz and Taylor Fritz. Alcaraz won 6-2, 7-5, setting off a wild celebration for Team Europe.
Fritz will be back for Team World as its highest ranked player at World No. 4. Joining him are fellow Americans Francis Tiafoe (World No. 17), Alex Michelsen (World No. 32) and Reilly Opelka (World No. 67). Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo (World No. 19) and Brazil’s Joao Fonseca (World No. 45) rounds out captain Andre Agassi’s squad.

Team World originally had Americans Ben Shelton and Tommy Paul committed, but both suffered injuries at the U.S. Open and are unable to participate.
Team Europe has won five of the first seven competitions.
