Tensions escalated this week as Wigan Warriors confirmed that Leigh Leopards will not be fulfilling Friday’s scheduled Super League semi-final fixture.
Wigan announced on Wednesday, October 1, that they had been formally informed at 10:37 PM on Tuesday, September 30, by Derek Beaumont of Leigh, that the team would not participate, despite extensive preparations by the home club.
The dispute appears to be over ticket allocations for the visiting fans.
Wigan stated that Leigh had been offered a substantial allocation of tickets, either 4,600 unreserved or 5,400 reserved seats in the North Stand.
This allocation was decided by the independent Safety Advisory Group and Wigan’s Ground Safety Officer following consultation with the police.

Super League officials also reviewed the arrangements and fully endorsed the plan, which exceeded the minimum 10 percent requirement for away supporters.
Wigan noted that the allocation was nearly double that threshold.

The Warriors stressed that legal obligations, safety regulations, and supporter welfare guide all their decisions.
“This is not open to negotiation,” the club said, emphasising that fan safety underpins every decision.
Despite Wigan’s statement, Leigh Leopards’ own social media continued to promote the semi-final as if it were still going ahead.
Posts encouraging fans to attend created a stark contrast with Wigan’s messaging, leaving supporters uncertain about the fixture’s status.

Wigan confirmed that preparations for the semi-final are ongoing, and further updates will follow as the situation develops.
The clash, already highly anticipated, now carries an additional layer of drama, with fans watching keenly as the dispute between the clubs threatens to overshadow what should have been a showcase Super League event.
