Sean McVay grandpa: John McVay

John McVay is best known for being one of the architects of the San Francisco 49ers dynasty in the 1980s and 1990s. McVay began his career coaching at a variety of colleges, but he spent three years as the New York Giants head coach before he made it to San Francisco.

Between 1980 and 1999, John McVay held a variety of roles in the 49ers' front office, including vice president and general manager. In that span, the 49ers won five Super Bowls as they became one of the fiercest teams in the league.

McVay retired after the 1999 season as San Francisco entered a transitional period. He died in 2022 at the age of 91.

Near the end of his life, though, John McVay got to see his grandson reach the pinnacle of the sport as a coach.

"Just amazing what Sean has done," John McVay said, via the Sacramento Bee in 2019. "I go around bragging, 'I’m his grandpa!' He’s made me famous again. Thank goodness. I was getting bored!"

John credited the fact that Sean grew up in a football family for his success in the NFL. As a kid, Sean would attend training camp practices and interact with the players or sit in on meetings.

"He'd been around football his whole life," John told the San Francisco Chronicle in 2019, "so he's never been overwhelmed by 'name' players. They'd been nice to him."

"I have to be the most fortunate guy in the country to have spent my entire 39-year career with Cox Television," McVay said as he retired.  "It has been an honor and a privilege to work alongside the Cox Corporate and station employees. They are the finest group of people and professionals in the broadcast industry and there is nothing more rewarding than being able to win together as a team."
