Mike Tomlin record: How Steelers head coach's 16-year streak without a losing season could be in jeopardy image

The Steelers got out to a surprising 6-3 start to the 2023 season, as one of the league's best defenses carried a mediocre offense.

Even still, Pittsburgh was in the hunt to win the crowded AFC North through the halfway point. As the season has gone on, the Steelers' weaknesses have exposed themselves.

Pittsburgh has now lost four of its last five games, riding a three-game losing streak with a 7-7 record heading into a pivotal division battle against the Bengals (8-6) in Week 16. It has fallen into last place in the AFC North and is hanging onto the AFC Wild Card picture by a thread.

DeCOURCY: Will the Steelers fire Mike Tomlin?

With three games remaining, the Steelers would have to go at least 2-1 to keep head coach Mike Tomlin's impressive streak of 16 consecutive seasons without a losing record alive.

They will take on the NFC Wild Card-hungry Seahawks in Week 17 and the first-place Ravens in Week 18, making this week's matchup that much more pivotal to finish over .500.

Mike Tomlin record

Tomlin succeeded Hall of Famer Bill Cowher as head coach of the Steelers back in 2007.

He owns a successful 170-100 record through Week 15 of the 2023 NFL season, good for a .629 winning percentage.

Tomlin has never finished below .500 as a head coach, leading the Steelers to the playoffs in 10 of his 16 seasons at the helm entering 2023.

Mike Tomlin winning seasons streak

Since Tomlin took over for Cowher back in 2007, the Steelers have finished at or above .500 in every season since.

That puts him at 16 consecutive seasons without a losing record — a streak that is in jeopardy with Pittsburgh sitting at 7-7 with three weeks to go in the 2023 season.

The Steelers have registered a winning record in 13 of Tomlin's 16 seasons, finishing 8-8 in the three others (2012, 2013, 2019).

Last four-game losing streak for Steelers

The Steelers are currently riding a three-game losing streak, in danger of dropping a fourth straight and falling one game under .500.

Losing streaks of this length hasn't been commonplace under Tomlin's tenure, but it did happen as recently as last season.

The 2022 Steelers won their first game of the season then lost four games in a row to the Patriots, Browns, Jets and Bills. They beat Tom Brady and the Buccaneers to get back in the win column, then lost two more games to the Dolphins and Eagles to get out to an ugly 2-6 start to the season.

However, Tomlin was able to keep his winning seasons streak alive after Pittsburgh went 7-2 out of the bye week, finishing 9-8 and just missing the last AFC Wild Card spot.

Mike Tomlin playoff record

Tomlin wasted no time picking up where Cowher left off, leading the Steelers to the playoffs in his first season and a Super Bowl title in his second season.

Tomlin had a 5-2 playoff record with a Super Bowl and AFC title in his first five seasons, but Pittsburgh hasn't had much postseason success since then.

Tomlin's playoff record stands at 8-9 for his career and the Steelers have lost four consecutive playoff games with his last postseason win coming in the 2017 AFC Divisional Round.
