Last time Chiefs missed playoffs: Revisiting Andy Reid's first team in Kansas City that failed to reach postseason

Dynasties in sports arise whenever teams consistently reach the peak of their sport. This could be making the playoffs or winning championships. 

The Kansas City Chiefs combined the two from 2015 to 2014, with the franchise making the playoffs 10 seasons in a row. The majority of the streak included deep playoff runs, including the Chiefs winning three Super Bowls in a row.

Given the franchise's prominence during the winning streak, many fans may think Kansas City was an organization that consistently made the playoffs — until this year.

Last time Chiefs missed playoffs

The last time the Chiefs missed the playoffs came in 2014, Andy Reid's first season with the team. Kansas City finished 9-7 and second in the AFC West.

Reid took over as head coach the year in 2013 and led the Chiefs to an 11-5 record, which was good enough for a playoff berth. In his second season, however, Kansas City didn't qualify for the postseason. 

Kansas City last missed the playoffs under the old playoff format, which featured only six teams. Even under the new format, though, the Chiefs still would have missed the playoffs, as they were the eighth-best team in the AFC that season. 

Kansas City made the playoffs each of the next 10 seasons and won three Super Bowls.
