Chiefs vs. Commanders final score, result: Patrick Mahomes overcomes early interceptions to lead Kansas City past Washington image

JUMP TO:

Patrick Mahomes found his form after two early interceptions, while Travis Kelce found the fountain of youth as the Kansas City Chiefs downed the Washington Commanders, 28-7, on "Monday Night Football."

Kansas City (5-3) endured all it could handle from Washington (3-5) in the first half, entering the halftime period locked in a 7-7 stalemate. Mahomes tossed two interceptions in the game's opening 30 minutes. One of those picks caromed off Kelce's hands.

But as the game wore on, Mahomes and Kelce's displays improved. The former collected a trio of touchdowns in the second half to power Kansas City's rout, while the latter recorded his best performance of the season — and made some franchise history in the process.

After Kansas City's winless start, Mahomes has come to life, emerging as an MVP candidate. Although Monday's performance was far from a classic for the 30-year-old, his numbers — 25-of-34 passing for 299 yards and three touchdowns — certainly popped. As long as the Chiefs keep winning, Mahomes will be in the mix for gold and silver.

Chiefs vs. Commanders live updates, highlights from 'Monday Night Football'

(All times Eastern)

End of fourth quarter: Chiefs 28, Commanders 7

10:45 p.m.:  Mahomes tacked on an additional two scores to push the Chiefs way out in front. What a second-half display by the future Hall-of-Famer.

9:55 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN!  Mahomes finally finds pay dirt! After placing the Chiefs on the cusp of the goal line courtesy of a lengthy pitch and catch between him and Kelce, Mahomes dispatched of onrushing defenders before tossing a feather to Hunt.

Chiefs 14, Commanders 7

9:45 p.m.:  We're back to life in Arrowhead. The Chiefs will start the second half with the ball under its spell.

End of second quarter: Chiefs 7, Commanders 7

9:24 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN!  Mariota — perhaps unexpectedly — tossed a moonball to Terry McLaurin, who evaded his marker to find himself wide open in the end zone. However, McLaurin readjusted as the ball tailed away, getting both is feet via toe-tap before falling out of bounds. After replay review, McLaurin was exonerated; the Commanders are on the board.

Chiefs 7, Commanders 7

9:18 p.m.:  McNichols traipses inside of Kansas City's 10. The Commanders are flying at the end of the second quarter.

9:12 p.m.:  Another wonderful play by Mariota, who hit Jeremy McNichols with a lofted pass to convert on third and short. The Commanders are in the red zone.

9:10 p.m.:  Mariota is quietly dealing so far. He's 11-of-13 for 116 yards so far. Just found sparingly TE Ben Sinnott for 22 yards on the dump-off. Once more, Washington is inside Kansas City territory.

9:05 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN!  Kareem Hunt finds pay dirt from short range, capitalizing a sizable gain from Kelce.

Chiefs 7, Commanders 0

8:56 p.m.: TURNOVER ON DOWNS!  You've got to give Dan Quinn credit for trying. However, his aggression might've cost the Commanders some points. Facing fourth-and-one on the cusp of Kansas City's 20, Washington's coach opted to send the offense back on the field. Mariota's throw was errant, leading to the Commanders' second turnover on downs in as many possessions.

8:50 p.m.: INTERCEPTION!  Travis Kelce's middling season continues. The future Hall of Famer couldn't corral Mahomes' pass on third down. In fact, he deflected it into the air a la Samuel, resulting in another interception — Mahomes' second of the day.

End of first quarter: Chiefs 0, Commanders 0

8:40 p.m.: TURNOVER ON DOWNS!  Interception notwithstanding — and it wasn't at all his fault — Mariota has had a strong start to life in Arrowhead Stadium thus far. Nevertheless, his pass to Zach Ertz on fourth down fell just short of the marker. Kansas City will get the ball back near midfield.

8:33 p.m.: INTERCEPTION!  Marshon Lattimore returns the favor, undercutting Marquise Brown's route to pick off Patrick Mahomes inside the red zone!

8:23 p.m.: INTERCEPTION!  After driving deep into Kansas City territory, Washington sees its possession crumble to a close after Deebo Samuel drops a gimme from Mariota and deflects it right into the path of Chiefs DE Mike Danna.

8:15 p.m.:  And we're off! The Commanders will start the opening frame with possession of the ball.

8:00 I.m.:  The stars are out and about for tonight's contest! Kickoff starts in 15!

7:15 p.m.:  Marcus Mariota will look to find success tossing arrows to Terry McLaurin and Deebo Samuel, Washington's two top targets. ESPN's Laura Rutledge reported that the Commanders have full faith in Mariota's ability to lead their offense in Daniels' absence.

6:45 p.m.:  Here's a look at the Chiefs and Commanders' inactive lists ahead of tonight's contest.
