Long live the AFC king - Chiefs' season ends in horrific way vs. Chargers image

It was Kansas City's final chance to stay alive in the 2025 playoff picture against the Los Angeles Chargers, but the football gods decided it wasn't to be.

Down 16-13 with under two minutes left, Patrick Mahomes drove his team to the Chargers' 46-yard line and close to field goal range.

But here is where the season went down the drain.

Mahomes was injured scrambling and was seen holding his left knee before being taken down to the locker room as two trainers helped him.

The Chiefs would see Gardner Minshew be intercepted, ending their chances of winning the game and seeing their season end in the process.

With three games left, the Chiefs have meaningless football ahead of them for the first time in the Mahomes era, and might not have No. 15 for the rest of the year as well.

Chiefs season ends in brutal way

Being swept by the Chargers, losing at home, and your quarterback on the game-deciding drive is just a horrible way to see your season end.

And now the Chiefs will be watching the playoffs from their couch for the first time under Mahomes' watch, but of course, all eyes are on Patrick's health after it looked like his knee hyper-extended on the play he was injured on.

Of the ways the Chiefs' season could have ended, the football gods decided to make it end in the worst way possible. Not only did the Chiefs lose the game, but they may have lost Mahomes for the year as well.

Granted, that is only three games, but still, what could go wrong for Kansas City in 2025 has gone wrong for the defending AFC champs.
