Andy Reid laments 1 crucial element that doomed Chiefs in Jaguars loss image

The Kansas City Chiefs' 2025 season continues to be a roller-coaster with Andy Reid's team going down 31-28 to the Jacksonville Jaguars in odd fashion.

It wasn't the loss itself that was odd, given that the Jaguars boasted one of the NFL's best defenses, but it was how the Chiefs lost.

In total, a whopping 13 penalties crippled Kansas City, as Reid's team had more total yards, more first downs, and didn't allow a sack on Patrick Mahomes, and averaged 7.6 yards per play. However, it lost the only stat that matters: the score.

And Reid knows what doomed his team.

“My hat goes off to Jacksonville, they did a nice job,” Reid said. “We obviously had 13 penalties to their four. Whether I agree with them or don't agree with them, it doesn't matter. They called them. You have that many penalties, you give up field position, you can out-stat them to death, but it doesn't matter. It's the score that matters. We've got to take care of business there.”

Chiefs not a consistent team through five weeks

One thing we have marveled at Kansas City as being in the Mahomes era is consistent. But through the opening five weeks of 2025, the Chiefs haven't been that.

Back-to-back losses to start the year, then a disjointed win over the New York Giants, before their best game of the season against the Baltimore Ravens, but then a very un-Chiefs-like performance against the Jaguars.

Kansas City had 13 penalties combined in its last two games, and matched that in four quarters in Jacksonville.

Now at 2-3 with the Detroit Lions up next, the Chiefs have to get more consistent, especially with the penalties, because one team that will make you pay for self-inflicted wounds is the Lions.
