When? That is the answer many have been wondering about Trevor Lawrence. The former 2021 number one pick has had questions about his performance since he entered the league. There have been high highs and low lows along his career, complete with three different head coaches, a questionable offensive line, and multiple players at the wide receiver position trying to be the number one wide receiver. All in all, Lawrence has been part of what has been around him, along with making some unexcusable and unexplainable mistakes, in addition to making the jaw-dropping passes. With his newest head coach, Liam Coen, things were beginning to ride the rollercoaster again with how he was playing. He would have great plays and stretches of play and then would flatten out. But in the last three games, Lawrence is starting to look like the guy Jacksonville fans want him to be.
Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars did what they were supposed to do versus the New York Jets, winning the game 48-20. The Jags dominated the Jets and made it clear early that they were not there to play around. As for Lawrence, he was 20 of 32 passes for 330 yards and five touchdowns. And he also ran for one touchdown, gaining 51 yards. Lawrence is the first quarterback with five touchdown passes, one rushing touchdown, and 50+ rushing yards in a single game.
Along with accomplishing these types of numbers, Lawrence has also thrown nine touchdowns and zero interceptions in the last three games. And in these last three games, the Jaguars have outscored their opponents 112-42. But it’s more than just the numbers when it comes to Lawrence. The biggest thing is that the costly, inexplicable mistakes have started to disappear. Those mistakes have turned into more assertiveness, whether it is throwing the ball away, taking what the defense gives you when throwing the football, or taking off and running. And despite the running game not exactly being consistent, the offense still seems to give opponents fits.
Lawrence isn’t a top quarterback in the NFL. Things have not progressed to that level. But what can be said is that he is getting better, more consistent, and showing some growth under Liam Coen. These two have connected, and Coen has tapped into something with Trevor, and, hopefully, for the Jaguars organization and fans, he has turned a corner so he does not end up back at that same corner again.
