Houston has always been a unique city for sports. Outside of the Astros, Houston sports fans haven't seen much success brought to the city in the 2000s. Just when excitement was higher than ever, things began to look rockier than ever.
The Houston Astros had one of the best records in baseball after sweeping the Los Angeles Dodgers in early July, despite having a historic number of players on the injured list. Ever since then, it's been a rocky road, and their playoff hopes are on the line. General Manager Dana Brown did a nice job adding bats to Joe Espada's lineup card, but it didn't seem to help the Astros.
Starting Pitcher Framber Valdez, who is expected to hit free agency in a few weeks, has begun to crumble and has not helped his team as expected over his last ten starts. Valdez is in the worst stretch of his career and seems to be totally checked out of Houston.
The Atros swept the Texas Rangers with playoff hopes, a tiebreaker, and the silver boot on the line. The next series, they turned around and got swept by the Seattle Mariners, putting them .5 games back of a wildcard spot. Can the Astros rally and win four more games to keep playoff baseball in Houston?
The Astros continue to struggle with runners in scoring position, which leads to a question of what the offseason will look like. Will they look for a new manager, new hitting staff, and new strength and conditioning coaches? Who will be traded? Who will be signed?
The Houston Texans had very high expectations heading into the 2025 season. A revamped offense, with a new coordinator, an overhauled line, and some added weapons. The Texans' defense was looking strong, expected to build off a great year, and key additions such as Sheldon Rankins and CJ Gardner-Johnson. However, fans are strongly disappointed after week 3.
The Texans' offense has managed to look worse than it did under former offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik. The Texans lost in close games to the Rams, Buccaneers, and Jaguars. While the games were close, the offense struggled to score in each game, especially when in or near the red zone. Fans are beginning to question former Rookie of the Year quarterback CJ Stroud and his abilities. While Stroud has struggled with some passes he usually makes, the offensive line, lack of involvement of better playmakers, and playcalling continue to be huge issues.
The Texans landed safety CJ Gardner-Johnson from the Eagles in a trade this offseason. In shocking news, the Texans released him on Tuesday afternoon. Johnson was a key part of the big plays that were given up by the Texans' secondary. Multiple reports stated that Johnson was complaining about his role, even complaining about what some other teammates were being paid, which ultimately led to his release.
With the odds of making a playoff push after starting 0-3 being low, fans are already talking about what the future holds. Should the team look for a new general manager, head coach, and more?
The Houston Rockets had a fantastic 2024 and have built a very strong young core. A trade for future Hall of Famer Kevin Durant had fans excited and ready to begin the season. However, on Monday, star point guard Fred Van Fleet tore his ACL, and all the questions are starting to be asked.
What does the future of each team look like in Houston?
