Patrick Surtain II injury update: Latest news on Broncos cornerback after exiting game vs. Cowboys with shoulder issue image

Denver Broncos star cornerback Patrick Surtain II left the first half Sunday's Week 8 matchup with the Dallas Cowboys after sustaining a right lower leg injury. In the second half, he again exited the game with a shoulder injury, and was eventually ruled out.

It is unclear when exactly Surtain hurt his shoulder, but he remained in the locker room after halftime, per the CBS broadcast.

Surtain's lower leg injury occurred on Dallas' first offensive possession of the game, as Surtain successfully defended a pass intended for Cowboys wide receiver George Pickens in the end zone. After breaking up the play, Surtain remained down and was soon tended to by the Denver training staff.

Here is what to know about Surtain's new injury and his status for the remainder of Week 8 and beyond.

Surtain's second injury is a shoulder issue presumably sustained in the first half. He and the team went to the locker room during the break, but he did not return to the field when the third quarter began, and wasn't able to return to the game.

NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that Surtain will miss 4-6 weeks due to the malady — labeled a pectoral injury. He was still seeking a second opinion, per Schultz, but isn't expected to need to undergo surgery to repair the ailment.

Surtain's first injury was ruled a lower leg injury. He was listed as questionable to return and missed one play.

After emerging from the blue medical tent to cheers, Surtain began moving on the Broncos' sideline to test the leg. He returned to action on second down on Dallas' second offensive possession.

Surtain will not be placed on IR by the Broncos, per Ian Rapoport, who reported that "it's possible" star corner only misses Denver's next three games. That would put him on track to return in Week 13.
