Who is Christian Parker? Meet Brian Schottenheimer's latest hire image

The Dallas Cowboys have their new defensive coordinator. News first broke Thursday of the Cowboys hiring former Philadelphia Eagles defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator Christian Parker, and Dallas formally announced the addition Friday morning.

Parker will be Dallas’ first defensive coordinator since the late 2000s with no prior head coaching or coordinator experience, and the 34-year-old is viewed by many around the league as a rising star in coaching.

Parker began his coaching career as the defensive backs coach for Virginia State (2013-14) before taking the same role at Norfolk State (2015-16). After stops at both Notre Dame (2017) and Texas A&M (2018) as a defensive analyst, Parker made the jump to the NFL, serving as a defensive quality control coach for the Green Bay Packers in 2019 and 2020. From there, he moved to Denver to serve as the defensive backs coach under Vic Fangio. After three years with the Broncos, he reunited with Fangio in Philadelphia prior to the 2024 season, where he was instrumental in coaching one of the league’s best defenses over the last two years.

His track record in player development is another reason for Cowboys fans to feel encouraged. He has helped elevate defensive backs at every prior stop in his pro coaching career, including Jaire Alexander in Green Bay, Patrick Surtain II in Denver, and the young duo of Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean in Philadelphia. Along the way, Parker has earned respect from his players, which was evident in their reactions when his move to Dallas was announced.

Parker will now look to assemble his coaching staff with free agency and the draft on the horizon. Dallas will have several opportunities to add top-tier talent, and Parker will be the key voice in shaping how the Cowboys approach both personnel and scheme on the defensive side as they move forward in the Brian Schottenheimer era.
