Bills reveal underrated reason for James Cook's success vs. Steelers image

The Buffalo Bills' run game was rolling against the Pittsburgh Steelers, with Joe Brady's offense putting up 249 rushing yards in the 26-7 win.

James Cook stole the show, with 144 yards on 32 carries to be the dominant force, but it wasn't all Cook that tore the Steelers apart.

Ray Davis posted 61 rushing yards from nine carries when it was James' time to rest, as the run game didn't suffer when No. 4 wasn't in the game.

And for head coach Sean McDermott, that might just be the secret sauce to the Bills maintaining their stellar run game down the stretch.

"It's big," McDermott said. "James' energy this past week in particular stood out. He was on fire, in the right head space, and he was rolling, not that he hasn't been. James is our number one back, but to have, whether it's Ty [Johnson] or Ray [Davis] or anybody else, step in and spell him the way that those two have in particular of late is huge for us and something that we have to make sure we continue as we move forward here."

Bills a run-first offense?

Brady made a point to state that he doesn't want the offensive identity to be just one thing, because if a defense takes that away, then the offense is in trouble.

But there's no denying that the Bills have had most of their success this season on the ground, with Cook leading the way. The offensive line has opened up huge holes, and while there are some injuries along the line, Buffalo is still stuck with the run game in Pittsburgh.

And if Davis or even Ty Johnson can maintain their high level of play when it is Cook's turn to sit and have a break, that is nightmare fuel, because in Pittsburgh, Davis had his way with the defense, along with Cook.

There was no relief for the Steelers, and that might be the recipe going forward for Buffalo.

Just run the ball.
