The SMU Mustangs kick off 2025 ranked No. 16 in the AP preseason poll, marking their first preseason ranking since 1985. Their 11-3 finish in 2024, including an undefeated ACC run and a playoff appearance, has vaulted the program into the national conversation. Still, head coach Rhett Lashlee is quick to keep expectations grounded.
“This is a brand new team that hasn’t accomplished anything yet,” Lashlee said. “As soon as you get comfortable, you stop progressing.”
That focus will be tested early with a loaded schedule featuring Clemson, Miami, Baylor, and rival TCU.
Statistical Snapshot
Last season, SMU averaged 36.5 points per game (8th nationally) and 429 yards of offense, balancing an explosive passing attack with a steady ground game. The offensive line excelled, allowing just 1.29 sacks per game. However, turnovers remained a glaring issue, as the Mustangs committed 24 giveaways, one of the highest totals in the country. Correcting that mistake is crucial if they want to remain in the playoff hunt.
Player Spotlight: RJ Maryland
Few players embody SMU’s 2025 hopes more than tight end RJ Maryland. A preseason All-ACC selection, Maryland’s 2024 season was cut short by an ACL tear. Before the injury, he posted 24 catches for 359 yards and four touchdowns. In 2023, he showcased his potential with 54 receptions, 518 yards, and seven scores.
Maryland, now on the Comeback Player of the Year watch list, gives quarterback Kevin Jennings a reliable red-zone target and a matchup problem for defenses. His return not only bolsters SMU’s offense but also provides veteran leadership in a season loaded with expectations.
Keys to Improvement
- Defense: Transfers must solidify the front seven and secondary.
- Ball security: Limiting turnovers will be crucial in close road matchups.
- Consistency: Road tests at Clemson and TCU could define the season.
SMU’s talent and depth point to a 9–3 or 10–2 finish, keeping them firmly in the ACC title race. If Maryland thrives and the defense matures, the Mustangs could once again crash the playoff conversation.
The Mustangs have arrived on the national stage—now the challenge is proving they can stay there.
