Oklahoma State and longtime coach Mike Gundy agreed to part ways on Tuesday. Some felt he deserved it; others were shocked. Regardless, after two decades at Oklahoma State, Gundy's tenure was destined to end soon.

One intriguing possibility is Texas A&M offensive coordinator Collin Klein.

Klein, 35, surprised everyone by leaving his alma mater, Kansas State, last offseason to take the same position with the Aggies. He has quickly found success in College Station, helping Texas A&M balance its attack behind new quarterback Marcel Reed early in the year.

CBS Sports' Chris Hummer wrote, “He's currently coaching a top 25 Aggies offense, and those in the industry consider him a future head coach.” The argument however for him to remain patient and return to his Alma Mater remains on the table with Kansas State – possibly opening up soon. “Klein is obviously very familiar with the Big 12 and can recruit out of Stillwater. It'll be interesting to see if Klein is willing to be patient, because it's conceivable his alma mater comes open over the next few seasons.”

A former Heisman Trophy finalist at Kansas State, Klein has long been considered a rising offensive mind and could be primed for a head coaching opportunity. With his experience in the Big 12, Oklahoma State is expected to take a hard look at him as it opens its first major coaching search in nearly two decades.

Gundy departs Oklahoma State with roughly $15 million and over 30 years at the school.
