FSU vs Alabama: What Nick Saban had to say image

Nick Saban says Alabama’s season opener against Florida State is one of the toughest Week 1 preparations he’s seen, citing significant roster and coaching changes at FSU while praising Kalen DeBoer’s leadership in his second year as Crimson Tide head coach. Saban, now two years removed from leading Alabama, remains both a steadfast supporter and outspoken critic of the program as DeBoer navigates a challenging schedule and rising expectations.

Saban weighs in on DeBoer's impact

During ESPN’s College GameDay last season, Saban acknowledged the positive shift under DeBoer, complimenting the “strong leadership” and cohesive culture that has emerged in DeBoer’s second year at Alabama. Saban noted, “Kalen has embraced the tradition and culture but has put his own mark on how he wants to coach the team”. The legendary coach continues to watch scrimmages from the press box and stays involved as a mentor, ready to offer advice if called.

Saban pointed out the difficulties in facing Florida State for the season opener, according to On3: “I do think (Florida State) has been a very difficult preparation. Florida State has 13 or 14 starters out of the portal, plus they’ve got a new offensive coordinator and a new defensive coordinator. So for a first game, it’s always a tough preparation, but this one is especially difficult with all the change.” The Seminoles’ recent transfer activity and schematic adjustments present Alabama with an unpredictable opponent and a steep tactical hill to climb.

Since stepping down from coaching in Tuscaloosa, Saban has been a prominent supporter of DeBoer’s era, though he remains the Tide’s most influential critic. After Alabama’s 9-4 season in DeBoer’s debut year -- a campaign marked by transition and scrutiny -- the team enters 2025 with greater comfort and rising optimism. DeBoer’s strong resume and attention to building player-driven motivation have earnestly begun shaping a new chapter for Alabama football.
