Trae Young trade details: Wizards acquire star guard from Hawks in early year deal image

Trae Young's time in Atlanta is over.

The Atlanta Hawks and Washington Wizards have agreed to a deal that sends Young to Washington in exchange for CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert. Young, who was at one point the face of the Hawks' franchise, is currently in the middle of his worst season since his rookie year, as both he and the team agreed it was time to move on.

The Hawks entered the season with expectations of contention, but they haven't lived up to the hype while Young has dealt with injuries. However, the team has played better without Young than with the point guard, which likely expedited the trade discussions.

Young heads to a Wizards team that is one of the worst in the NBA but has a strong nucleus of young talent. Now, the veteran point guard has a chance at a fresh start in a place where there isn't much pressure.

Here's a look at the deal that sends Young to Washington.

Wizards get:

  • PG Trae Young

Hawks get:

  • CJ McCollum
  • Corey Kispert

The Wizards make the move to acquire Young, giving up a package headlined by PG C.J. McCollum in return. McCollum is currently in the second year of a two-year, $64 million he signed with the New Orleans Pelicans in 2024, and is making $30 million this year before hitting free agency.

Young is currently making $46 million in the fourth year of a five-year, $215 million deal that he signed with the Hawks in 2021. However, the fifth year of that deal is a $49 million player option, so in the Summer, Young can either opt-in for next year or opt-out and become a free agent.

Young is eligible for an extension, but he and the Hawks didn't agree to a deal ahead of the season-opener in October.

Hawks guards on roster

With Young now traded, here's a look at the guards who Atlanta will trust to fill his void.

  • CJ McCollum
  • Corey Kispert
  • Nickeil Alexander-Walker
  • Dyson Daniels
  • Luke Kennard
  • Keaton Wallace
  • Nikola Durisic
  • Caleb Houstan

Alexander-Walker and Daniels are their two best guards and have started most of the season together while Young was injured. Wallace and Kennard have been Atlanta's primary backup guards as well, coming off the bench.

McCollum has played 35 games for the Wizards this year, averaging 18.8 points per game, his worst number since 2014-15. He will provide Washington a veteran presence to help replace Young on the roster.
