Thunder rookie forward Chet Holmgren made his Utah Summer League debut Tuesday night against the Jazz, and to say that the betting market took notice would be an understatement. Holmgren is now the favorite for the 2023 NBA Rookie of the Year award after his eye-catching performance.

The No. 2 overall pick did a little bit of everything, showcasing his defensive and offensive abilities. Holmgren led both teams with 23 points, seven rebounds, six blocks, and four rebounds.

Heading into the NBA Summer League, Holmgren had the third-best odds (+480) behind Orlando’s Paolo Banchero (+350) and Houston’s Jabari Smith Jr. (+420).

As we saw with Banchero and Smith, Holmgren enters a situation in Oklahoma City where he’ll see a lot of playing time this season. The good news for Holmgren is that he got a chance to set the tone for the rest of his classmates on Tuesday night.

Holmgren is now the betting favorite to win Rookie of the Year +360 after his efficient night from the field. Banchero has the second-best odds at +440, while Smith has the third-best odds at +550.

Granted, it’s summer league, so odds shift over the next few weeks are expected and have to be taken with a grain of salt. However, Holmgren looked like the best player on the floor on Tuesday outside teammate Josh Giddey. He knocked down a couple of three-pointers from the top of the key, hit a vintage one-legged Dirk Nowitzki fade away, and played well on defense.

Betting advice: If you are a Thunder fan or someone who placed a wager on Holmgren to win Rookie of the Year, his performance was something to behold. It also gives us a small glimpse of what we could see during the regular season. Again, remember that the odds will likely change after Banchero and Smith Jr. play later this week. It would not be a bad idea if you wait after the summer league to wager on ROY, as you could receive better value, but keep an eye on all the key players throughout the summer.
