We've seen the same story before in the NBA.
A team trades away a young player with star-level potential for an aging star.
It usually doesn't turn out well for the team that gets the older player that they gave up a haul for.

The two trades that teams have regretted have had significant impacts on the 2025 NBA Finals.
Those two trades were the Shai Gilgeous-Alexander/Paul George trade and the Tyrese Haliburton/Domantas Sabonis trade.
The aging star for a young player, packaged with a haul, never seems to work, but Houston believes it'll work here.
It was viewed as a failure for the Clippers and Kings since they didn't capitalize on the opportunities the trade created.

The Clippers didn't make a single NBA Finals appearance, and only had a conference finals appearance to show for in the Paul George era.
Injuries to George and Kawhi Leonard played a role, but they ended up losing him last summer in free agency.
The Kings had one of the best records in the West in 2022-23 season, yet failed to make it out of the first round, with that being their best chance to date, in the Sabonis era.
The Kings have a ways to go to change the roster up, with Sabonis still playing well, but there has to be some regret from the Clippers and Kings in making the trades they did.

Both Haliburton and SGA are in positions to win their first NBA title in Game 7, and are doing it as the current faces of their franchises.
The question that comes up now is whether Houston will have the same feeling of regret with their recent trade.
Durant likely only has a few seasons left, so the expectations will be high to cash out on a title during the window they have.
Whether or not Green goes on to play with the Suns or gets re-routed to another team, he could still blossom into a player with number two overall pick potential that he's shown he can be.

Green was criticized for a poor playoff performance in his playoff debut against Golden State this year, which likely had a significant role in why Houston included him in the KD trade.
Green is still only 23 years old and has averaged over 21.0 PPG in two out of his first four seasons.
