The New York Knicks have made another addition ahead of training camp, signing forward Garrison Mathews to a training camp deal, per Stefan Bondy of the New York Post.
Mathews and Shamet to compete for final roster spot
The deal marks the second signing of the day for the Knicks, who also signed Landry Shamet to a one-year deal on Thursday. Mathews will now compete to make the team during training camp, with the expectation being that he and Shamet will compete for that last roster spot.
Mathews is known for his three-point shooting prowess. In his six-year NBA career, Mathews is shooting 38 percent from beyond the arc, and has shot that same mark, or better, in four of his six seasons in the NBA.
Last season with the Atlanta Hawks, Mathews averaged 7.5 points per game and shot 39 percent from three-point range. He will have to earn a spot on the Knicks’ bench throughout training camp, and while he likely won’t see heavy minutes barring any injuries, Mathews can still be a depth option and floor spacer if needed in spurts.
The Knicks enter next season as potential title contenders in the Eastern Conference. After reaching the conference finals for the first time since 2000 last season, the Knicks are looking to reach another milestone, and earn their first championship since 1973.
