The Houston Rockets made quite the deal this offseason, making a trade with the Phoenix Suns that gave them future NBA Hall of Famer Kevin Durant.
However, this Durant is going to be 37 years old at the end of this month, and a drop off in his production is expected eventually within the next couple of years, though he did average 26.6 points with the Suns last season.
But according to Tim McMahon of ESPN, the Rockets don't need to be going all in on "The Durantula."
Why Does Houston Needs To Be Careful?
“By all appearances and by what I’ve heard, they’re not going all-in on an extension for Kevin Durant," MacMahon said on the Hoop Collective podcast. "Now, doesn’t mean it won’t happen, but there’ve been rumblings of, 'Hey, KD's not gonna push for the full max.' I don’t know that the Rockets are going to put anything on the table that’s close to the max."
The main reason being that a lot of younger players on the Rockets are expecting big cashouts from the team, and with the team leaning on their long-term support rather than Durant's veteran prowess for the long haul, there's no need to cause any conflict with the future stars of the team.
