Reports have indicated that the Houston Rockets aren't too willing to give Kevin Durant a max extension. Whether that changes or not remains to be seen, as one could argue for both sides.
Ultimately, if Durant tells the Rockets that he wants the money, they have to give it to him. There's a reason they went out and made a blockbuster trade for arguably the greatest scorer of all time, so not keeping him around after that deal wouldn't make much sense.
The Rockets had a great offseason, highlighted by the Durant trade. Although they had to move assets for him, the Rockets ultimately came out ahead. They got an elite player for a decent price, and that's always a good thing.

The contract situation could be a bit of an issue, but according to a recent report from NBC Sports, it doesn't sound like it will be. According to NBC, some believe that Durant could take a two-year, $100 million deal, which would be below the max he can take, but still a decent contract.
“The contract has to be short in this case, but what is a fair number for the future Hall of Famer? One source who spoke to NBC Sports during Summer League suggested KD might dip to about the $100 million mark for two years, around $10 million a season below the max but still $50 million a season,” Kurt Helin wrote.
As long as the Rockets can save some money along the way to pay others, or make other moves, this shouldn't be too much of an issue.
At this stage of Durant's career, he might be willing to give up some of that money. He clearly wants to win another championship, so this shouldn't be a major issue.
