Former Denver Nuggets guard Russell Westbrook still remains a free agent several weeks into the offseason.
He declined his player option for next season at the start of the offseason, and has seen a number of different suitors interested in his services. Now, the former NBA MVP is chiming in on his unpredictable free agency.
In his “Word of Westbrook” blog, the nine-time All-Star broke his silence to those that are wondering why he still hasn’t landed with a new team.
“It’s no secret that there’s news about where I’ll end up on the horizon, and I appreciate y'all's interest,” Westbrook wrote to curious fans. “But just hold tight, there’s more to come.”
Westbrook isn’t the same MVP-caliber player he once was several years ago, but is still a positive contributor to winning basketball. Since embracing his new role in the league as a valuable sixth man, Westbrook has lengthened his career. In each of the last three seasons, he has received votes for the Sixth Man of the Year award. Last season with the Nuggets, his lone with the team, he averaged 13.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 6.1 assists per game.
There are many teams that could benefit from Westbrook’s services even in a reduced role off the bench. He may be past his MVP-winning days but Westbrook still flashes his signature hustle plays that made him one of the league’s most exciting talents. Getting a player with that sort of track record on a cheap deal is sure to entice teams to come calling.
