The Dallas Mavericks have been busy this offseason, but their latest move will require another one.

Throughout the past couple of weeks, the Mavericks have been busy adding to their roster for next season. Of course, Dallas has made some high-profile moves like drafting Cooper Flagg and adding D’Angelo Russell in free agency.

However, the Mavericks’ latest move was to sign Dante Exum, bringing the Australian guard back to Dallas for another year with the franchise. Considering Dallas’ backcourt situation and Spencer Dinwiddie leaving for Charlotte earlier in the day, Exum’s return could be perfect for both sides, as Exum also turned down a couple of contenders, according to Shams Charania’s report.

On the surface, it seems like a perfect deal for the Mavericks to get a defensive-minded player back on the roster who can also help with their shallow backcourt depth. However, not everything will be simple with this transaction.

As Marc Stein noted, Exum would be the 16th player on the Mavericks on a standard contract. Of course, the Mavericks will need to cut that number to 15 ahead of next season.

With recent reports saying the Mavericks might be looking to trade Olivier Maxence-Prosper and others, they have likely already planned for this situation. In any case, there will still be a small roster crunch in Dallas, and the team has plenty of options.

It seems like nothing can go smoothly when the Mavericks are involved, but at least this is only a bump in the road compared to some of the problems Nico Harrison and company have faced over the past few months.
