The Dallas Mavericks had a down year in 2024-25 after making it to the playoffs during the 2023-24 season. Klay Thompson is entering his second season with Dallas, and he is hoping that this team can return to championship form this season.

Thompson is hoping that he can also be a big contributor this season. With the way this roster is constructed, Dallas could potentially be a playoff team once again this year. Can they potentially make noise in 2025-26?

Klay Thompson has high expectations

Christian Clark of the Athletic interviewed Thompson on the Mavericks about the upcoming 2025-26 season. Clark said, "Thompson badly wants to win a fifth championship ring. He believes the Mavericks are good enough if they can get healthy this season. Dallas has elite defensive personnel. Adding Irving back to the mix would make the Mavericks good enough offensively to go all the way, Thompson said."

The Mavericks will be without Kyrie Irving to start the season. Health is going to be a major question for Dallas this season. Anthony Davis and Dereck Lively II are going to need to stay healthy in the front court in order to be good defenders at the rim.

Thompson also said in his interview with Clark, "There’s no reason we can’t be the highest rated defensive team in the NBA. In my experience, what helps to win is having a roster full of two-way players. We have that." Thompson has won four NBA championships before with the Golden State Warriors.

It is going to be challenging for him to win his fifth ring with the Mavericks. This team has a lot of talent on the roster. Another player to watch out for this season is rookie Cooper Flagg. If he can play well right away and the defense also gels, this is no reason why this team can't be contenders in the Western Conference once again.
