With the season now over for the New York Yankees, they’ll have some decisions to make regarding some of their most important pieces from this past season.

One of those pieces is Cody Bellinger, who was acquired by the Yankees from the Chicago Cubs prior to this season. Bellinger enjoyed a stellar first season in New York, slashing .272/.334/.480 with 29 home runs and 98 RBIs.

Bellinger currently has an opt-out from his three-year, $80 million deal he signed with the Cubs before the 2024 season, and after a strong season with the Yankees, it appears more likely that he’ll opt-out.

Following the Yankees’ defeat at the hands of the Toronto Blue Jays in the ALDS, Bellinger was asked about the possibility of returning to the Yankees in 2026, even if he opts-out of his contract and hits the open market.

“I had an unbelievable time putting on this uniform,” Bellinger said. “Yankee Stadium, the fans, the organization, the culture that these guys have created in this locker room. It's special.”

The Yankees do currently have a bit of a crowded outfield situation. Bellinger, Trent Grisham — if he is brought back as a free agent — , Jasson Dominguez, Aaron Judge, and minor league star Spencer Jones could all be in line for playing time come 2026. Additionally, the Yankees could pursue outfielder Kyle Tucker in free agency as well. These factors could affect how they tackle Bellinger’s market.

Nonetheless, Bellinger was key to the Yankees’ success this season, and the team will likely do what they can to keep him in pinstripes long-term.
