Anthony Volpe hasn’t panned out for the New York Yankees, plain and simple.
Since debuting in 2023, Volpe has been one of the league’s least productive hitters, slashing .222/.283/.380 in his career. Also, after being a plus defender in his first two seasons in the pros, Volpe now leads Major League Baseball in errors with 18 in 2025. The Yankees passed up on players such as Corey Seager and Carlos Correa in hopes that Volpe would be the next star Yankees shortstop, but so far that hasn’t come to fruition.
The Yankees could move on from Volpe this winter
As a result, many have speculated that the Yankees could opt to go in a different direction beyond this season, and move on from Volpe being the everyday shortstop. A player that has been linked recently in connection with New York is Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette.
Bichette could hit the open market this winter, and should command quite a hefty price tag. FanSided’s Christopher Kline cited the Yankees as a fit for Bichette.
“Bichette can stabilize the left side of the infield next to Ryan McMahon. Moreover, he's a far more consistent hitter than Volpe,” Kline said. “He can take advantage of the short porch at Yankee Stadium without falling victim to the extended cold spells that still plague Volpe. Bichette doesn't strike out a lot. He gets on base in workmanlike fashion and puts a ton of runs on the board as a result.”
Landing Bichette — a two-time All-Star — would be a huge upgrade for the Yankees at a premier position. Bichette has led the American League in hits twice — and his 177 hits this season currently leads the AL — and this season he is slashing .307/.352/.477 with 18 home runs, 91 RBI’s and an AL-leading 42 doubles.
