The New York Yankees provided an update on shortstop Anthony Volpe, and it puts his status for the start of next season into question.

Yankees GM Brian Cashman told reporters on Thursday that Volpe underwent surgery on his shoulder. Volpe first injured it back in May, and played through it during the season. As a result of the procedure, Volpe can’t swing a bat for four months, and can’t dive on his shoulder for six months. He’ll begin the year on the injured list, and could be back in April or May.

Playing through the injury may have had a negative impact on Volpe’s performance throughout the season. In 2025, he had his worst season of his Major League career, leading the American League with 19 errors, and slashing a porous .212/.272/.391 with 19 home runs and 72 RBIs. In the playoffs, his struggles went even further, going 1-15 with 11 strikeouts in the ALDS against the Toronto Blue Jays.

There aren’t any indications yet of who will replace Volpe at shortstop to start next season, but the Yankees will hope that their young shortstop comes back healthy next season, and enjoys a much better campaign than the one he did in 2025. Volpe is running out of time to impress the Yankees, so he’s going to need to have a big season in 2026 if he wishes to remain in the Bronx long-term.
