Anthony Volpe’s career has been viewed by many as underwhelming. The New York Yankees shortstop just wrapped up his third big league season, and things haven’t improved much since day one — if at all.

In 2025, Volpe had arguably his worst season, leading the American League with 19 errors, and slashing .212/.272/.391 with 19 home runs and 72 RBIs. He was even worse in the playoffs, managing just one hit in 15 at-bats with 11 strikeouts in the ALDS against the Toronto Blue Jays.

It should be noted that Volpe did play through a shoulder injury throughout most of the season, but it is still concerning to see him get worse in almost every aspect of the game.

Despite his struggles, GM Brian Cashman reiterated his belief in the shortstop to reporters on Thursday.

“I believe in the player still,” Cashman said. “It doesn't mean we don't play with all aspects of roster assessments. He's 24 years old. Don't think New York's stage is too big for him.”

Volpe will miss the start of the 2026 season due to a procedure done to repair his injured shoulder, but he’ll be looking to bounce back in a big way next season. It feels as though it may be make or break time for Volpe, and he’ll need to show the team that he’s capable of being the franchise shortstop he was once touted to be if he wants to remain in the Bronx long term.
