Cody Bellinger had an exceptional season for the New York Yankees in 2025. Now a free agent after opting out, the Yankees are prioritizing his return to pinstripes.
After being traded to the Yankees from the Chicago Cubs before the season began, Bellinger slashed .272/.334/.480 with 29 home runs and 98 RBIs. Bellinger seems to have rediscovered at least a portion of his former MVP self, and could command big dollars in free agency.
Nonetheless, the Yankees are still going to go after Bellinger this offseason to bring him back. On Thursday, GM Brian Cashman spoke with reporters about Bellinger, and praised his performance this season.
“He was an impact player for us, I'm glad we got him,” Cashman said. “He was one of the many reasons why we were in a position to believe that we were capable of great things this year. I thank him for everything he's done. Certainly would love to have him with our team moving forward, but we haven't had any of those discussions.”
The Yankees are also projected to be in the mix for Kyle Tucker this offseason as well, which could impact how hard they go after Bellinger. Additionally, Jasson Dominguez, and minor league star Spencer Jones could also be in for some more playing time with the Major League club in 2026. All of these factors could impact the Yankees willingness to bring back the 30-year-old Bellinger.
