Thursday night, in Game 3 of the AL Wild Card series between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees, Yankees rookie Cam Schlittler turned in the best performance of his young career, shutting out the Sox through eight innings, while striking out 12 and allowing only five hits.
And of all that thought highly of his performance, Matt Hyde, the Yankee scout who first saw Schlittler during his time at Northeastern University, likely thought the best of him.
Hyde was in attendance to watch the 24-year-old deliver his memorable performance.
"Surreal"
“He was great,’’ Hyde said shortly after the performance. “Unbelievable. He answered the bell, and it was fun to watch. Surreal. Especially to do it against Boston was amazing.”
Schlittler was drafted by the Bronx Bombers in the seventh round of the 2022 draft, and made his MLB debut this past July.
His masterpiece saw him become the first pitcher in MLB history to go eight scoreless innings while not walking anyone and striking out a dozen batters.
The youngster's performances against AL East teams isn't quite finished yet, as the Yankees will now take on the Toronto Blue Jays in the ALDS.
