New York Yankees reliever Devin Williams will be a free agent after this season. After struggling for most of the season, Williams found his stride down the stretch, which could impact how the Yankees navigate his free agency.
Williams was acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers before the 2025 season. Immediately thrown into the closer’s role, Williams was a disaster in the ninth inning for the Yankees, posting a 4-6 record with a 4.79 ERA, and four blown saves in his first season with the Yankees.
Williams finished the year out strong
Williams was taken out of the closer’s role for good after the Yankees acquired David Bednar at the trade deadline, and as such Williams regained at least a little bit of that confidence that helped surge him into one of the best relievers in baseball in years past. Over his final 15 appearances, Williams pitched to a 3.07 ERA and notched 26 strikeouts in 14.2 innings of work.
After the Yankees were eliminated in Game 4 of the ALDS at the hands of the Toronto Blue Jays, Williams was asked about the possibility of playing elsewhere in 2026.
“At first, it was a challenge, but I've grown to love being here,” Williams said. “I've really enjoyed my experience here.”
Williams will certainly not garner a long-term deal in free agency as previously thought, which could entice the Yankees to bring him back on a sort of “prove it” deal.
