The New York Metslost to the Miami Marlins 4-0 on Sunday and there are many questions that will come for this baseball team as the 2025 season ends for them. They miss the playoffs with an 83-79 record.
First baseman Pete Alonso had a tremendous season with a .272 batting average with 38 home runs and 126 RBIs, along with one stolen base and two caught stolen bases. His on-base percentage was .347. It will be interesting to see if the Mets will be able to keep him for the long term.
New York Mets Pete Alonso Will Be Opting Out
When Alonso signed his contract, many people were wondering if he was going to opt-out after the 2025 season ended. Well, the Mets star first baseman spoke to the media after the game. Anthony DiComo of mlb.com reported,
"Pete Alonso says he will opt out of his contract and re-enter free agency."
This should not be a surprise by any means. Will the Mets be able to keep him for the long-term? He has been with the team since the 2019 season. If they do not bring him back, there are going to be a lot of angry fans. It will be up to David Stearns to bring him back, unless owner Steve Cohen wants to bring him back no matter what it takes.
If he is not brought back next season, it would be interesting to see who will be the Mets first baseman for 2026 and beyond. Alonso is 30 years old. He would be difficult to replace if they were to lose him in free agency. The Mets fanbase wish they were talking about a series with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Instead, they are going to have to wonder if Alonso is going to with this franchise in 2026 or if he will be trying to chase a World Series title elsewhere.
