The New York Mets are in the midst of quite the difficult stretch. At 78-73, the team is just 1.5 games ahead of the Arizona Diamondbacks for the final Wild Card spot in the NL, leading to an increased sense of urgency for the team.
After signing Juan Soto to a historic free agency deal this past winter, the Mets entered this season as a potential championship contender. Now, with less than two weeks remaining in the regular season, the Mets are in real danger of missing the postseason entirely, something that many Mets fans would’ve never seen coming back in March.
The Mets have picked up wins in back-to-back games following an eight-game losing streak, but the team is still clinging on for dear life as the postseason nears. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza spoke with the New York Post’s Mike Vaccaro about the importance of closing out the season strong.
“A good night the whole way around,” Mendoza said after the Mets’ 8-3 win over the San Diego Padres. “Now we have to keep it up.”
New York will now try to finish out the season strong, and hold off the Diamondbacks from snatching the final Wild Card slot from their grasp. The Mets will finish the season against the Padres, Washington Nationals, Chicago Cubs, and Miami Marlins, so they’ll need to take care of business against the lesser opponents in Miami and Washington, and salvage what they can against the Padres and Cubs in order to enter the postseason on a high note.
