The Houston Astros traded away outfielder Kyle Tucker to the Chicago Cubs before the start of the 2025 MLB season with one-year remaining on his contract. Throughout the entire 2025 MLB season, there has been much discussion if Tucker is going to re-sign in Chicago.
At the moment, the Astros are not in the playoffs and preparing for the 2026 MLB season. As for Chicago, Tucker is still playing, and the Cubs will face the Milwaukee Brewers in the NLDS. Once the postseason is over, it will be interesting to see where the free agents will sign. Could Houston potentially bring him back for the 2026 season?
He's Not Expected Back in Houston
Erik Beaston of bleacherreport.com was making predictions for some key free agents this upcoming off-season. New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso and Philadelphia Phillies designated hitter Kyle Schwarber will be two key free agents this offseason. To no surprise, Tucker is also a very highly prized free agent.
Beaston made a prediction for where he is going to play next. He said, "Tucker was one of the stars of the Astros teams that routinely competed for the World Series title. He is a championship piece who can contribute to any contending team, including Chicago, and make them better.
Whether the Cubs will be willing to match any other teams' offers for that large a number will ultimately determine whether he stays in the Windy City or takes his talents elsewhere. Prediction: Tucker moves on, with the Phillies as an intriguing option."
He would be a huge signing for Philadelphia this off-season. In 136 games played during the regular season with Chicago, he had a .266 batting average with 22 home runs and 73 RBIs, along with 25 stolen bases and three caught stolen bases. His on-base percentage was .377. Tucker is 28 years old and is currently in the prime of his career.
It would be interesting to see how much money he would get on the open market if the Cubs don't re-sign him. Assuming the Astros cannot bring him back, there is a chance that the organization moves in a different direction entirely this off-season.
