Is the championship already over? Norris' woe at Dutch Grand Prix could cost him image

It was a heartbreaking scene as Lando Norris' McLaren saw smoke on lap 65.

An oil leak brought his Dutch Grand Prix to an end and potentially dealt his championship hopes a major blow.

His teammate Oscar Piastri took it from pole to the chequered flag to hold onto top spot in the standings, extending his lead from nine points to 34. A significant jump.

A DNF for Norris could cost him his maiden championship title, but is it too early to say it's over?

With nine races remaining and the McLaren's dominance this year, it's only fair to say that anything can happen.

It was suspected that issue which led to Norris' retirement was down to the Mercedes power unit, but the team later confirmed it was a chassis problem.

After the events of the Dutch Grand Prix, it wouldn't be a surprise that the Papaya team do thorough checks of both cars to avoid any more mishaps, before they head to Monza for the next Grand Prix.

Despite the Sunday setback for Norris, team principal Andrea Stella still thinks the Brit has what it takes to fight to the end.

There's still plenty of opportunity for Norris to take the fight to Piastri, but it will mean putting in perfect drives with no mistakes - with the hope that nothing goes wrong with the car.

And with the Australian's cool, calm and collected persona, Norris may have to take a leaf out of his book to ensure he can take the title fight all the way to the last race in Abu Dhabi.
