Edson Alvarez would have been disgruntled not to have been brought off the bench last Saturday.

His West Ham United teammates suffered a 3-0 drubbing in their opening Premier League game of the new season to newly promoted Sunderland.

Mexico's captain was linked with AS Monaco and to former club Ajax earlier in the transfer window. His time in East London could soon be over.

Fabrizio Romano posted on X: "Fenerbahçe open talks to sign Edson Álvarez as new midfielder, strongly wanted by José Mourinho."

Should Edson Alvarez join Fenerbahce?

The Premier League is the best division in the world, so it would be a step down for Alvarez to move to Turkey.

The Mexican has already found out that he may struggle for game time under Graham Potter this season, so it could be smart to transfer to a less competitive league.

With it being the World Cup next summer, which is being co-hosted by Alvarez's country, Mexico, he needs to be playing regularly.

Under Mourinho at Fenerbahce, Alvarez could be part of a midfield including former Manchester United players Fred and Sofyan Amrabat.

After finishing second last season in the Super Lig, Mourinho's side will be looking to go one better this campaign.
