Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the signing of Joao Palhinha from Bayern Munich on a season-long loan, with an option to make the deal permanent next summer.
The 30-year-old midfielder comes with extensive Premier League experience, having spent two seasons with Fulham before joining Bayern in a £42.3 million move last summer.
But he featured sparingly in the Bundesliga last season, making just 17 league appearances as Bayern sealed the league title.
Tottenham’s new head coach Thomas Frank has prioritised adding midfield depth to his squad, with the question marks still lingering over the futures of Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur.
The arrival of Palhinha now offers a short-term solution with proven Premier League experience.
Spurs confirmed the signing on Sunday (August 3) via their social media channels.

What did Palhinha say upon joining Spurs?
“When I knew of the interest from Tottenham, I didn’t need to think about it too much. I just wanted to come (here),” Palhinha told Spursplay.
“The coach (Thomas Frank) is probably the main thing which had more of an impact on my decision – when you feel that someone wants you, it means a lot and you are closer to making an easy decision.
“I will try to help to show again what I am capable to do it. Now my home is here (in London) and I will try to enjoy these moments with my family.”
The Portuguese star becomes Spurs’ third signing of the summer window, following the arrival of Mohammed Kudus and the permanent addition Mathys Tel from Bayern after a successful loan spell.

What can the Portuguese bring to Tottenham?
Palhinha’s experience in England was likely a crucial factor in his signing.
He enjoyed his time in the Premier League with Fulham between 2022 and 2024, making 68 appearances for the Cottagers before moving to Germany.
During his time in England, he led the league in tackles (300) – a staggering 109 more than any other player – and ranked sixth for interceptions (92), underlining his strong ball-winning capabilities.
The loan deal also allows Tottenham to maintain a stronger degree of financial flexibility as they continue to strengthen other areas of the squad.
With James Maddison sidelined through injury in a recent friendly against Newcastle United and Heung-min Son having confirmed his departure, Spurs are expected to prioritise attacking reinforcements.
Palhinha has three years remaining on his Bayern contract, but his future beyond this season may well depend on how he settles back into English football.
