Son Heung-min poised for historic MLS switch with record transfer fee image

Son Heung-min is expected to complete a transfer to Los Angeles FC for a fee in the region of £20 million, closing the chapter on a glittering decade-long spell at Tottenham Hotspur.

The 33-year-old announced his departure from Tottenham on Saturday (August 2) during a press conference in Seoul, where Spurs capped off their preseason tour of Asia.

His switch to Major League Soccer now appears imminent, and Son could well set a new transfer record in the United States with this move.

What’s the latest on Son’s MLS move?

Fabrizio Romano reported that a verbal agreement is in place between Son and LAFC, with only a medical and final paperwork standing between the South Korean star and his move to the United States.

While the final fee has yet to be confirmed, multiple sources indicate a figure close to £20 million has been discussed.

If completed, the deal could set a new MLS transfer record, potentially surpassing the £22.5 million Atlanta United paid Middlesbrough for Emmanuel Latte Lath earlier this year.

Son is expected to take up one of LAFC’s three Designated Player (DP) slots and reunite with close friend and former Spurs teammate Hugo Lloris, who has been with the club since 2024.

Son’s Seoul Farewell

Son played what is expected to be his final match for Spurs on Sunday (August 3) in a 1-1 draw against Newcastle United.

The South Korea international received a guard of honour from both sets of players upon being substituted in the 65th minute, marking an emotional farewell in front of his home fans.

He leaves Tottenham as a club legend, having bagged 173 goals in 454 appearances, and his legacy in the Premier League will remain forever etched in the hearts of Spurs fans.

Son joined Tottenham from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 and went on to become one of the club’s most iconic players, eventually leading them to their first trophy in 17 years earlier this year when he captained the side to victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final.

With Son now bound for MLS and former captain Harry Kane settled at Bayern Munich, new manager Thomas Frank appears poised to lead Tottenham into a new era – one without the two defining figures of the club’s modern generation.
