Thomas Frank labels James Maddison's preseason injury as 'brutal': Games missed for Tottenham star image

Tottenham have signed off on their preseason tour of Hong Kong and Singapore with a 1-1 draw against Premier League rivals Newcastle United in Seoul.

The main focus at the Seoul World Cup Stadium centred on departing Spurs captain Son Heung-min as he played his final game for the club following 10 seasons with the North London outfit.

However, the game ended on a sour note for the thousands of Spurs fans gathered in the South Korean capital, with James Maddison stretchered off in the closing minutes.

The England international collapsed to the floor in agony with seven minutes to play, after only coming on eight minutes before, and was eventually stretchered off by the Spurs medical team.

Maddison was the focus of concern from players from both teams, with Son distraught on the sidelines, and Thomas Frank offered an update on his No.10 at full-time.

"We're pretty sure it was the same knee he injured before. I think sometimes in life and football things can be both beautiful and brutal. That's what we got today. It looks like with Madders a bad injury and then on the other side unbelievable scenes for Son."

Maddison endured an injury disrupted campaign in 2024/25, with a knee problem keeping him out of their UEFA Europa League final win, and this setback will rule him out of their campaign opener at home to Burnley on August 16.

Frank is expected to offer an update on Maddison in the coming days but a timeline on his return might not be available until Spurs land in Bavaria.

Tottenham wrap up their preseason at Bayern Munich on August 7 before the UEFA Super Cup against PSG on August 13.
