Group D analysis
Hosts United States were afforded an extremely kind draw and were given probably the softest group of four teams of any in the World Cup.
Mauricio Pochettino's side secured two of the lower-ranked sides from Pot 2 and 3 in Australia and arguably the easiest of the four UEFA pathways from Pot 4. There are no top-10-ranked teams in this group, and nobody outside of the hosts in the top 20, regardless of who qualifies from the UEFA pathway.
While it was hairy going into the Pot 4 draw knowing they were required to get a UEFA qualifier, they avoided all the most difficult opponents. It's likely that Turkey qualify from their group of four teams, but even that would be kind. If Romania, Slovakia, or Kosovo emerge, the U.S. Will rejoice even further.

Group G analysis
Perennial underachievers Belgium will be happy reviewing their World Cup group, as the Red Devils should walk this round robin. If they don't, it's their worst tournament yet.
Egypt and Iran will both present challenges for Belgium putting the ball in the net, as both are defensively stout, but those two sides present very little in the way of attack — even Egypt with Mohamed Salah can be notoriously ineffective up front.

Group A analysis
While Mexico will still be jealous of the cakewalk presented to their northern neighbors, El Tri will still be satisfied with the proceedings at the World Cup draw.
Like the United States, Javier Aguirre's side do not have to face any opponent in the top 20 of FIFA's world rankings, and their UEFA pathway also does not present too much alarm. If Denmark qualify, that could give Mexico a test, but they should manage to progress relatively simply from this group.
South Africa can be pesky, and South Korea will have their sights set on challenging to win the group, but this setup could have been much, much worse for Mexico. In the end, they'll fancy their chances to move on comfortably.

Group J analysis
Lionel Messi and defending world champions Argentina should absolutely walk this group with little competition in the end.
The Albiceleste were handed an exceedingly kind draw. Algeria and Riyad Mahrez will be difficult defensively, and Austria could maybe trouble them on their day, but it's hard to see Argentina having too many difficulties here whatsoever.
There could be a slip or two, as there was in the opening match in 2022 when they fell surprisingly to Saudi Arabia, but in the end, there will likely be no trouble for Argentina here.

| Wed, Jun. 24 | TBD | TBD vs. Qatar | TBD |
Group B analysis
The 2026 World Cup hosts were all afforded kind draws, even by past standards. It's not unusual for host nations to have a relatively easier time with their group, as they are given Pot 1 status and thus avoid the top teams, but this is quite soft indeed.
Even as Canada drew the potential to face Italy thanks to UEFA Playoff A looming from Pot 4, they were paired with 17th-ranked Switzerland and 51st-ranked Qatar, both of whom are beatable.
Switzerland should likely win the group, but even they are vulnerable in their current state. Qatar finished last in their 2022 group even on home soil and should not present much of a challenge. Even if Italy qualify, there is the potential for Canada to progress from this bunch.

Group F analysis
Japan can cause problems for the Netherlands, as they did for Germany and the rest of their group four years ago, yet both top-ranked teams should have no problems out of this bunch.
Tunisia, ranked 40th in the world, are not to be overlooked, but they will have a difficult time stacking up with a roster that lacks global stars in the way some other top African sides do.
The UEFA playoff qualifier, meanwhile, shouldn't present too much of a challenge, even if Robert Lewandowski and Poland make it through to the tournament.

Group L analysis
Two of Europe's top teams were paired together in Group L, which early on looked tasty. However, in the end, this should be a cake-walk for both England and Croatia.
Panama have given other CONCACAF teams fits on occasion throughout World Cup qualifying history, but on the global stage likely do not have the firepower to trouble either of those European giants. Americans will know that Ghana have been troublesome at the World Cup in the past, but the Black Stars are well past their former glory and do not possess the ability to blow up the chalk here in Group L.

Group K analysis
Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal will face Colombia in what could be an entertaining early match, as both of those sides challenge for the top spot in the group.
This is also the first group where the lower-tier teams could potentially give those above them in Pot 1 and Pot 2 a realistic test. Uzbekistan are not to be trifled with, as they are an extremely veteran team that have been quietly on the rise in recent decades, and DR Congo (should they qualify) can be pesky as well.
Ultimately, however, it's hard to imagine either of the top two teams here really falling apart to miss out on a knockout-stage spot.

| Thu, Jun. 25 | TBD | Curacao vs. Ivory Coast | TBD |
Group E analysis
This is where things start to get testy. For yet another World Cup, Germany have been handed a group which just maybe could be problematic.
Ecuador shocked CONMEBOL and finished an astonishing second in their World Cup qualifying standings even with a points deduction, and they will be a true test for the European side. Ivory Coast, while not up to the standards of their former selves in years past, can still cause problems if the opportunity is right.
While Curacao will be considered minnows at this tournament and will rightly be longshots to even sniff knockout-stage qualification, their mere presence should give higher-ranked teams pause. The tiny former Dutch colony has done well to curate a squad of European internationals not quite to the level of playing for the Netherlands, and they could surprise fans at this tournament.
This will be a fun group to watch.

Group H analysis
Early on at the draw, Group H looked ripe as a true Group of Death candidate. The world's top-ranked side in Spain being drawn alongside a strong Pot 2 team in Uruguay had fans salivating for even more chaos further down the ranks.
Unfortunately, that didn't quite pan out. While Saudi Arabia did manage to beat Argentina to open 2022 and are always a difficult test under Herve Renard, it's not quite the most explosive selection Pot 3 could have mustered. Cape Verde, meanwhile, are not exactly a major concern for the higher-ranked sides.
There could be some silliness here, but ultimately Group H is far too top-heavy to be a true Group of Death.

| Wed, Jun. 24 | TBD | Morocco vs. Haiti | TBD |
Group C analysis
Undoubtedly the most fascinating group at the 2026 World Cup is Group C.
Brazil are the most successful side in international football history, but their recent performances both in CONMEBOL qualification and at recent World Cup tournaments suggest they are on a downward trajectory. The legendary Carlo Ancelotti has been tasked with reversing that course and restoring the Selecao to former glory, but he will have a real test of those credentials here.
Morocco presents maybe the toughest possible draw from Pot 2, as Achraf Hakimi and other European-based stars have the African nation at its highest level in decades, perhaps ever. Then pulling Scotland from Pot 3 made the task even tougher, as they are a resilient side who have already caused some upsets in European qualifying.
Haiti aren't much of a test from Pot 4, but the other three teams are intriguing enough on their own to excite fans and provide possible fireworks. Expect chaos from Group C.

Group I analysis
There were no true Group of Death standouts, but Group I presents maybe the toughest top-to-bottom four-team roster of them all.
Kylian Mbappe and France, having reached two straight World Cup finals and eyeing another title, need no introduction. Meanwhile, the other three participants behind them will be on the hunt for an upset.
Senegal smoked their qualifying group, scoring 22 goals and conceding three across their 10 matches, and have a litany of current and former European-based players at their disposal. Norway presented one of the most dangerous Pot 3 sides at the draw, as Erling Haaland is enough on his own to strike fear in opponents, and when paired with Martin Odegaard and other world-class players, this team is ready to make waves.
To round things out, Iraq or Bolivia are likely to qualify from the Intercontinental Playoff path 2 and present one of the tougher challenges Pot 4 could have offered, especially from a defensive perspective.
