Bayer Leverkusen win Bundesliga title 2023/24: Xabi Alonso's team end Bayern Munich dominance image

Bayer Leverkusen became champions of Germany for the first time on April 14, 2024, defeating Werder Bremen 5-0 to claim the Bundesliga title with five games to spare.

No side other than Bayern has won the German Bundesliga since 2011/12, but Xabi Alonso is closing in on a magnificent achievement in his early managerial career.

His stellar season in charge of Leverkusen has seen him attract top attention all around Europe, and most recently he was the favourite to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool following his departure at the end of the season.

Much to the delight of Leverkusen fans, though, Alonso put to bed the rumours and confirmed he will remain as the German club's coach next season.

He is now the man to have delivered Leverkusen a very first Bundesliga title, and a famous season could yet end in a treble: his team are in the final of the DFB-Pokal and look set to progress to the semifinals of the UEFA Europa League.

When did Bayer Leverkusen win the Bundesliga?

Leverkusen have only dropped points on four occasions this season and their most recent win, a 4-0 victory over Werder Bremen on April 14, secured them the Bundesliga title.

On Saturday, Bayern returned to winning ways as they beat FC Koln 2-0, while Stuttgart defeated Eintracht Frankfurt 3-0. Those results, however, only postponed the Leverkusen celebrations until Sunday.
