Mexican giants CF Pachuca and Austrian outfit Red Bull Salzburg are set to lock horns in a FIFA Club World Cup Group A clash at Cincinnati's TQL Stadium on Wednesday.

RB Salzburg experienced an unexpected twist in their domestic dominance this season. After reigning supreme with 11 straight Austrian Bundesliga titles, their streak came to a halt, courtesy of a relentless Sturm Graz side.

The Red Bulls slipped to third in the standings, finishing eight points off the pace set by champions Sturm Graz, with Austria Wien also edging them out for second place.

However, the upcoming Club World Cup might prove a bridge too far. Drawn in a group featuring continental heavyweights Al-Hilal and European giants Real Madrid, Salzburg face a steep uphill climb. A group-stage exit appears the most likely outcome.

Meanwhile, Pachuca returns to familiar territory, gearing up for their fifth shot at Club World Cup glory after previous outings in 2007, 2008, 2017, and 2018. They booked their ticket by clinching the 2024 CONCACAF Champions Cup, but recent domestic form casts doubt on their prospects.

The Mexican side faltered in the Apertura, finishing a lowly 16th, and only scraped into the Clausura playoffs by placing eighth, before bowing out in the quarterfinals.
