Chelsea continued their dominance of the London rivalry with Tottenham by claiming a deserved 1-0 win.
Joao Pedro's first-half goal after some superb, combative work from the excellent Moises Caicedo was enough to give the Blues their fifth consecutive win in this fixture.
Tottenham's gameplan of setting out with a box midfield was derailed early on when Lucas Bergvall was forced off with a concussion.
Thomas Frank is likely to be most displeased by the fact that his team were physically second-best throughout, while set-pieces and Kevin Danso's long throws provided their only notable moments for encouragement
Joao Pedro and Enzo Fernandes were both close to adding further goals to avoid the prospect of a frantic finale. In reality, Tottenham were the ones hanging on as Chelsea substitute Joao Pedro spurned a glorious chance.
Chelsea move up to fourth, behind Spurs on goal difference and on 17 points, as are Sunderland and Manchester United.
Tottenham remain high up in the table despite taking just one point from their past four home games, a dire return that Frank must improve.

Tottenham vs. Chelsea live updates, highlights, and commentary
Fulltime
Chelsea win, and deservedly so. Spurs were wretched and lucky to escape with a 1-0 defeat. Both of these teams are on 17 points, alongside Manchester United and Sunderland. Thanks for joining us.
90+3 mins: Now Vicario saves from Joao Pedro. Chelsea really should be out of sight.
90+2 mins: Oh goodness, Spurs get themselves a mess, Gittens has a chance to seal the points a blazes over.
90 mins: Six minutes to be added on.
89 mins: Adarabioyo coming on for Fofana. Changing your centre-back at 1-0 with a minute, plus stoppages to go. Okay then...
87 mins: Cucurella wears a cross on the face and it's a Tottenham corner. Kudus boots it straight into Sanchez's gloves. Considering so much of Spurs' gameplan today has revolved around set-pieces, you'd probably want to be good at them.
83 mins: Chelsea are seeing this one out fairly comfortably. Given that, I'm not sure Neto needs to be running the clock down with an obviously genuine touch of cramp.
76 mins: Lavia replaces Gusto for Chelsea
74 mins: Neto with a stinging effort that's saved by Vicario. Spurs are only still in this game because of their goalkeeper.
72 mins: Johnson, Odobert and Udogie come on for Kolo Muani, Porro and Simons as Spurs make a triple change.
68 mins: Fernandez goes flying in for a bouncing ball and catches Palhinha around the knee. The referee instantly produces a yellow card and players from both teams exchange some views.
65 mins: Porro with the long throw. Well, it's not that long. It barely reaches the box. But it causes a bit of confusion before Chalobah wins a free-kick.
59 mins: Chelsea break from Spurs' latest corner and Simons has to hack down Garnacho as he approaches the right-hand corner of the box. That's a booking. Romero and Richarlison coming on for Danso and Bentancur.
57 mins: Caicedo sets Chelsea away by winning possession again. Garnacho can't pick out a teammate with his pass but this is close to risible from Spurs at the moment.
56 mins: Danso knocked over by Joao Pedro. Neto can't find the finish as he shoots too close to Vicario.
53 mins: Another good chance for Chelsea to make it 2-0 but Enzo Fernandez heads over.
50 mins: Danso flings in a long throw, Fofana completely misjudges it. Bentancur's eyes light up but Caicedo steals in ravenously.
Kickoff: 2nd Half
We're back at it. No further changes for either side.
Halftime
Chelsea lead and deservedly so. They've produced nearly all the moments of quality in a frantic, physical game of few chances.
45+5 mins: That's the closest Tottenham have come. Kolo Muani and Sarr work the ball to Kudus. Sanchez gets down to beat away the hosts' first shot on target
45+3 mins: Oof, Bentancur a bit late on James. Studs into the ankle. No malice but a nasty one. Chalobah is the ban with a yellow card, though, after extending his complaints.
43 mins: Ohhh, Joao Pedro should have two! Vicario with a fabulous save to turn the ball ove the top. Spurs need halftime here, but there'll be plenty of stoppage time to navigate after the incident with Bergvall earlier.
38 mins: Sanchez claims a free-kick and then fizzes a brilliant long ball downfield for Neto. Vicario comes out well to mop up, but there was a definite sense of dread around the stadium from the home fans then.
34 mins: GOOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLL!!!!!!! Joao Pedro!!!!!!
Joao Pedro finishes nicely but this goal is all about Caicedo. First the Ecuador midfielder snaps into a challenge inside the final third to put Tottenham on their heels. Spurs get in back but Caicedo is into ransack Van de Ven. He can't finish but the ball spins to Joao Pedro and he does the honours.
32 mins: Now here come Spurs up the other end. Kudus blasts over.
31 mins: Spurs cough up possession in the build up and Joao Pedro has a fabulosu chance. Vicario stands firm to save.
30 mins: Sanchez pouches the throw and Cbelsea's plan can whirl into action. Fernandez overhits his pass to Gusto on the right, though, and Simons is back to make a solid challenge.
29 mins: Joao Pedro glances away, with gives Kevin Danso the chance to wheel out his mighty long throw. Joao Pedro, Gusto and Garnacho are all way up field to try to take advantage of any potential counter-attack.
28 mins: Vicario will carry on for now and Porro prepares to send in another in-swinging corner from the left..
27 mins: Concern for Spurs with Vicario down and needing treatment. He missed the midweek Carabao Cup loss to Newcastle due to a fitness issue and this really doesn't look ideal.
25 mins: Garnacho with a nice give and go with Fernandez, on into the Chelsea area. Bentancur scrambles back to clear.
23 mins: Someone's gone down in a heap at the back post there, but nothing to unduly attract the attention of the referee. The ball comes back in and Sanchez comes a long way. Really has to make the catch... And does.
22 mins: Porro flings it in flat towards the near post. Chalobah heads aways and the Chelsea centre-back diverts the follow-up cross behind his own crossbar.
21 mins: Spurs have barely had a sniff in the Chelsea half but Sanchez has haphazardly conceded a corner. Can they capitalise?
14 mins: Fernandez, who is picking up some nice position in the final third, slips a pass to the overlapping Garnacho. Porro blocks amid strangled claims for handball. Here's Garnacho again... Chelsea corner.
7 mins: Simons comes on for Bergvall. Chelsea corner from the right but it's a free-kick to Tottenham after Bentancur and Fofana wrestle one another into the net.
6 mins: Bergvall wants to continue but he's walking unsteadily and it looks likle the medical advice will be that he's withdrawn.
4 mins: A couple of meaty challenges already. Bergvall just getting a check under the concussion protocols.
Kickoff: 1st Half
Chelsea kickoff. Sanchez pumps it long and the ball goes through to his opposite number. Then Garnacho has an early tangle with Porro but there's not much in it.
5 mins before kickoff: Here come the teams. A crackling atmosphere and some pyro for a fixture that rarely disappoints.
15 mins before kickoff: In his pre-match interview with Sky Sports, Enzo Maresca has been discussing a Tottenham team "with so many midfielders". He's certainly banking on Bergvall being part of the midfield unit, likening it to tactics Frank used at Brentford.

30 mins before kickoff: In the Premier League's 3 p.m. Kickoffs, Arsenal march on with another win and another clean sheet at Burnley. That puts Mikel Arteta's men seven points clear at the summit. Nottingham Forest and Manchester United played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at the City Ground, Crystal Palace's win over Brentford put them level on points with Manchester City, while Fulham and Brighton enjoyed comfortable wins over Wolves and Leeds respectively. Wolves have just two points from their winless first 10 games and are in a whole world of trouble.
1 hour before kickoff: Spurs boss Thomas Frank has selected all of Pape Sarr, Palhinha, Rodrigo Bentancur and Lucas Bergvall in his starting XI. It'll be interesting to see whether Bergvall starts in one of the wide attacking roles or if that's a narrow midfield four.
1 hr 15 mins before kickoff: The teams are in. Here's the Chelsea XI. It looks like skipper Reece James is starting in midfield.

Tottenham vs. Chelsea lineups, team news
We know that Guglielmo Vicario will return in goal to replace Cup deputy Antonin Kinsky, but beyond that it's unclear how Thomas Frank will revert his squad for Premier League play, as he did not rotate as much as expected for the EFL Cup match.
Micky van de Ven should come back in along the defensive line, moving Joao Palhinha back to midfield after he stepped in at the back for the EFL Cup game. Brennan Johnson and Xavi Simons were deployed in each of the last two games and therefore could rotate out, with Mathys Tel and Wilson Odobert both pushing for minutes.
Both Randal Kolo Muani and Richarlison have been ineffective up front in their recent starts, so who gets the nod at striker in league action.
There are a host of Tottenham players carrying fitness issues, with Dejan Kulusevski, Cristian Romero, Destiny Udogie, and Dominic Solanke all out injured but expected to return shortly.
Tottenham starting XI (4-3-3, right to left): Vicario (GK) — Porro, Danso, van de Ven, Spence — Sarr, Palhinha, Bentancur — Kudus, Kolo Muani, Bergvall
Tottenham subs: Kinsky (GK), Romero, Udogie, Simons, Odobert, Johnson, Tel, Scarlett, Richarlison
After Maresca made wholesale changes for the midweek EFL Cup match, he is likely to bring most of the starters back in for their return to league play.
Fans got their hopes up of a return soon for Cole Palmer after seeing him in his kit at Cobham, but reports claim that he has not yet been brought back into training just yet and is likely still out this weekend. Liam Delap only just returned from injury as he came off the bench against Wolves, but was sent off for two yellow cards and will be suspended for this game.
That means Enzo Fernandez should move up to the No. 10 position, while Joao Pedro takes over at the striker position. Marc Guiu was deployed up front against Sunderland, but was ineffective in his first Premier League start, and is unlikely to be given another go.
Tosin Adarabioyo and Jorrel Hato are some of those likely to return to the bench after a League Cup start but Malo Gusto keeps his place at right-back, with captain Reece James deployed in midfield alongside Moises Caicedo.
Chelsea starting XI (4-2-3-1, right to left): Sanchez (GK) —Gusto, Fofana, Chalobah, Cucurella — James, Caicedo — Neto, Fernandez, Garnacho — Joao Pedro
Chelsea subs: Jorgensen (GK), Acheampong, Tosin, Hato, Lavia, Andrey Santos, Estevao, Gittens, Guiu
