It looked like a return to Rangers for Steven Gerrard would be the perfect fit following Russell Martin's sacking.

Gerrard won the Scottish Premiership as Rangers manager during the 2020/21 season. However, it did not work out for him at Aston Villa or at Al-Ettifaq.

Returning to Ibrox could have been the place for the Liverpool legend to rebuild his reputation as a manager. It was then a shock to learn that he had dropped out of the running.

There are still other top-quality coaches in contention for the Rangers' job, including some with Premier League experience.

Record Sport has reported that "the club have also spoken to German coach Danny Rohl as well as recently-sacked West Ham boss Graham Potter and Gary O'Neill."

Rangers need a manager who will make an instant impact at Ibrox

As Rangers are currently eighth in the Scottish Premiership, they will need a manager who can turn their season around quickly.

O'Neil knows how to turn around a Premier League team's fortunes mid-season as he took over at Bournemouth following Scott Parker's sacking.

After guiding the Cherries to safety in the division, many thought it was harsh that O'Neil then lost his job.

He did not have to wait long for another opportunity. O'Neil then took over at Wolverhampton Wanderers just before the following Premier League season after Julen Lopetegui left the club.

O'Neil's first season at Wolves went well as they finished 14th, but he was sacked during his second campaign with the club.

Potter needs to get away from English football and re-establish his reputation after short spells at Chelsea and West Ham United.

Rohl is a highly regarded manager who was most recently at Sheffield Wednesday. He has also been an assistant with Germany, Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig, and Southampton
