Rangers put out a statement late last night announcing that their manager, Russell Martin, had been sacked.

The short update from the club mentioned, "While all transition periods require some time, results have not met the club's expectations."

Martin appeared to be a fitting appointment as he is a former Rangers player. His managerial experience also included guiding Southampton to promotion to the Premier League

However, after just 17 games in charge, Martin has been shown the door. He failed to qualify Rangers for the Champions League, and they then lost their opening two Europa League matches.

Rangers are expected to challenge Celtic for the Scottish Premiership, but they are currently eighth after seven matches in the division this season.

Who could replace Russell Martin at Rangers?

Martin's style of play and insistence on playing out from the back have cost him his job, as they did with Southampton.

Rangers need a manager who will get the team organised again, and this could be by turning to a former boss.

talkSPORT has reported that "Steven Gerrard is expected to be considered, while Danny Rohl is another name appreciated by senior figures at the club."

Gerrard was a highly rated coach when he was at Rangers. He won them the Scottish Premiership, but his tenure with Aston Villa was a disaster.

The Liverpool legend has since managed Al-Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League. Gerrard needs a job where he can rebuild his reputation as a manager, and this could be by returning to Rangers.

Rohl is an up-and-coming manager who did well at Sheffield Wednesday under difficult circumstances. He has experience of being an assistant manager with Germany, Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig, and Southampton.
