It’s happening again. England will face Spain in Sunday’s Euro 2025 final in Basel — a rematch of the 2023 World Cup final that saw the Lionesses’ dreams shattered under the Sydney lights.

Having lifted their first major trophy just a year earlier at Euro 2022, expectations were sky-high. But in Sydney, England were outplayed by a sharp, technical Spanish side.

The only goal came after Lucy Bronze lost the ball in midfield, allowing Spain captain Olga Carmona (who will be in the squad again this Sunday) to punish them with a low finish past Mary Earps.

Will history repeat itself?

Well, not necessarily. England beat Spain at Wembley in February — making them the only team to do so in over a year — though Spain edged their most recent encounter 2–1 in June. Overall, the Lionesses have lost just five of 19 competitive meetings.

Still, with reigning Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmatí pulling the strings and Spain looking more cohesive than ever, many see La Roja as slight favourites.

But England are the defending European champions, and belief is strong within the camp.

“This is a new moment, a new game. We respect Spain, but we believe in ourselves," said experienced leader Millie Bright.

The pressure is different now. Beyond the trophy, there’s the weight of expectation — to maintain momentum behind the growing women’s game in England. Another title could inspire the next generation; another loss might raise questions.

“We know what’s on the line. It’s not just about winning — it’s about continuing what we started,” head coach Sarina Wiegman said.

Kick-off is 6pm local time (5pm BST) in Basel. And once again, all eyes are on the Lionesses.
