Former Premier League referee David Coote has been suspended for eight weeks and dismissed by the Football Association following a breach of FA rules.
The decision comes after a video from July 2020 surfaced on social media in late 2024 showing Coote making inappropriate remarks about then Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp.
The video, which sparked widespread criticism, was found to breach the FA’s Rule E3.2, which prohibits misconduct including comments referencing nationality.
Coote admitted the charge and has been ordered to complete a mandatory face-to-face education programme as part of the sanction. UEFA has also imposed a ban preventing him from officiating European matches until June 2026.
What happened in the video?
In the footage, Coote makes disparaging remarks about Klopp, referencing his nationality in a manner deemed inappropriate by the FA.
The resurfaced clip reignited scrutiny of officials’ conduct years after the original incident.
Timeline of events:
July 2020: The original remarks are filmed.
Late 2024: The video is leaked on social media, leading to an investigation by the FA.
Early 2025: An independent Regulatory Commission reviewed the case, resulting in Coote’s eight-week suspension, dismissal from his referee role, and a mandatory education programme.
August 2025: The FA publicly announced the sanctions
Klopp, who previously addressed the matter, called the incident disappointing but welcomed the FA’s decisive action. Coote has publicly apologised for his conduct.
Separate gambling allegations against Coote were investigated but closed without charges.
The FA’s ruling and dismissal of Coote underline its commitment to maintaining integrity and respect in football, sending a clear message that misconduct by officials will not be tolerated.
