Next Middlesbrough Manager Odds: Gareth Southgate in the running to replace Rob Edwards image

Rob Edwards has jumped ship from promotion-chasing Middlesbrough after agreeing a three-and-a-half-year contract to become the head coach of Premier League basement boys Wolves.

His appointment at Molineux could be announced today as Edwards makes the change less than five months after signing a three-year deal at the Riverside Stadium.

He was stood down from Saturday's match against Birmingham, won by Middlesbrough to keep them 2nd in the Championship - five adrift of league leaders Coventry after 15 matches played.

Let's look at the latest betting odds for the next Middlesbrough manager.

Who is the favourite to be the next Middlesbrough manager?

The bookmakers' favourite to replace Rob Edwards at Middlesbrough (2/1 BetVictor) is Carlos Corberan, himself under huge pressure at Valencia after an awful start to the season in La Liga.

His team did pick up a point against Betis last night to move out of the bottom three on goal difference having collected just 10 points from 12 matches. Only bottom club Real Oviedo and 16th placed Osasuna have scored fewer goals.

Corberan joined Valencia after a productive two-year spell with West Bromwich Albion, where he won 10 of his first 13 matches to take the Baggies from second bottom to a credible 9th place in 2022/23.

His team finished 5th the following season but were beaten in the playoffs by Southampton - themselves still in the market for Will Still's replacement.

Why is Rob Edwards leaving Middlesbrough?

It is somewhat puzzling that Edwards would trade a Premier League push with Middlesbrough to take over at a Wolves team priced by Paddy Power at 1/25 to be relegated. They are eight points adrift of safety after 11 matches having picked up just two points and scored only seven goals.

Clearly, though, he is a desperate for a guaranteed second shot at the big time. He impressed in the Premier League with Luton Town, who picked up many admirers in scoring 52 goals despite collecting just 26 points. He left Luton 20th in the Championship, only two points above the bottom three on their way to a second consecutive relegation.

Who else is in the running to be the next Boro manager?

Gary O'Neil is another frontrunner in the next Boro manager odds market having dropped out of talks to return to Molineux last week. He is a 3/1 chance, the same as Tony Mowbray - a two-time West Brom manager out of work since leaving the Hawthorns for a second time in April. Steven Gerrard and Gareth Southgate are the other high-profile names in the mix.

Gareth Southgate Middlesbrough Odds

Is Gareth Southgate a genuine contender to return to the Riverside 16 years after his first spell as the club's manager? The 55-year-old has, of course, gone on to huge success with England, reaching consecutive European Championship finals as well as a quarter-final and a semi-final at the last two World Cups. He is an 8/1 chance to replace Rob Edwards, giving him an implied chance of 11.1%.
