Newcastle United have had a second bid reportedly worth £55million rejected for Jorgen Strand Larsen, but are expected to return with a third following comments from Vitor Pereira that hinted Wolves may agree to sell the striker.
Strand Larsen came off the bench to score twice as Wolves fought from 2-1 to beat West Ham 3-2 in second round of the EFL Cup.
But there is a chance that was his last game for the club, with Newcastle maintaining their interest in the Norway international as they seek to finally sign at the end of a frustrating transfer window with Alexander Isak's future still in doubt. Isak still wishes to leave Newcastle despite a visit from the club hierarchy this week in a bid to resolve the situation.
News of Newcastle's second bid came after Wolves' win over West Ham. Though it was rejected, the words from Pereira gave an indiction that a compromise can be reached.
Pereira offers Newcastle Strand Larsen encouragement
Wolves manager Pereira was predictably quizzed on Strand Larsen's future in his post-match press conference.
"If it's my decision, of course (I want to keep him), because he's a very important player," Pereira said.

"It's not only about the technical and tactical (ability), it's about the character. He's a player with character.
"I imagine his mind at the moment, listening to a lot of things, reading. He goes to help the team and in the last minutes to go back and help as a centre-back.
"He is a team player. He is a top player. Until now, Jorgen is our player. He is a very important player for us and we will see what happens. Football is football and every player has a price, even Messi or Cristiano.
"I understand football but for me it’s very important for us. We will see what happens."
While initial reports had indicated Strand Larsen was not for sale, Pereira's remarks run contrary to that stance.
Indeed, it appears Wolves would begrudgingly sell the man who scored 14 goals for them last season and made his loan move from Celta Vigo permanent last month for the right price.
And, with reports suggesting Strand Larsen is keen on the transfer, it might not be long before Newcastle are back with a third bid.
